생각지대

발제문

우리는 시간적으로, 공간적으로 ‘일각’만을 보며 살아갑니다. 세계는 나의 표상이라는 말과 같이, 우리가 지각하고 있는 세계는 실재 자체가 아니라 나에 의해서 표상된 세계임을 부인할 수 없습니다. 하지만 특별한 계기가 없다면, 내가 보는 것이 ‘일각’임을 인식하는 것은 어렵습니다.

우리가 보는 것이 ‘일각’임을 인식하지 못한 채 주관적인 시야만으로 공간을 바라보게 된다면, 이러한 주관성은 전체를 보려는 노력을 회피하거나 왜곡하는 방식으로 공간에 투영됩니다. 누적된 왜곡 투영의 경험은 선택적 지각이나 방어적 지각 오류와 같은 잘못된 고정관념의 주된 원인이 됩니다. 더욱이, ‘도시 설계자’로서 앞날을 가진 건축학도인 우리가 편향된 태도로 도시를 방관한다면 개인의 시선에 갇힌 채 현재에 머무르는 도시 설계자가 되어버릴 수도 있습니다. 미래로 나아가는 도시설계자가 되기 위해, 우리는 주관적인 시야로 공간을 본다는 것을 깨닫고, 한 개인의 시야가 온전한 전체일 수 없음을 이해해야 합니다.

우리는 도시를 ‘전체’로 보기 위해서, 도시에 존재하는 ‘내부인’과 ‘외부인’의 표리관계에 주목하고자 합니다. 거주자로서 도시를 직접 경험하는 ‘내부인’과, 여행자의 입장으로 도시를 바라보는 ‘외부인’은 도시에 공존합니다. 그럼에도 우리는 도시의 내부인으로서 도시를 잘 안다고 자신을 과대평가하고, 타인의 시선과 관점은 과소평가하고 있을지도 모릅니다.

이에 생각지대는 한국의 건축학도와 해외의 건축학도가 서로의 일각을 대조하는 과정을 통해 전체로서 도시를 바라볼 수 있는 기회를 제공하고자 합니다. 참가자들은 여러 서울 지역을 함께 답사하면서 각자가 인식한 서로 다른 서울의 모습을 공유하고, 이를 통해 서울이라는 도시를 재해석할 수 있습니다. 이 과정 속에서 참가자들은 내외부인의 시선을 교차하는 방식을 통해 서로의 ‘일각’들을 조합하고 재구성하는 단계를 거쳐, 하나의 편향된 ‘일각’에서 보이는 한계성에서 벗어나 도시를 보다 입체적으로 바라보게 됩니다. 익숙해진 틀과 환경을 낯설게 보고 스스로의 시선과 주관에 의문을 제기해 보는 이러한 접근 방식은 ‘일각이 아닌 전체’로 나아가는 첫 번째 걸음이 될 것입니다.

도시에 존재하는 내-외부인의 경험적 레이어를 병합하는 본 프로젝트의 시도를 통해 향후 도시를 파악하는 우리의 관점에 변화가 있기를, 나아가 미래로 향하는 거시적인 관점을 갖춘 도시설계자에 한층 다가설 수 있기를 기대합니다.

Tip of the City

We live in the city only seeing the ‘tip’ in terms of time and space. As the saying goes, “The world is my representation”, it cannot be denied that the world we perceive is not an entire world itself, but a world represented by ourselves. However, it is difficult to recognize that what we see is only the ‘tip’ of the city without chance.

If we perceive a space in a subjective perspective without recognizing that what we see is only a ‘tip’, this subjectivity leads to the tendency to avoid seeing the ‘whole’. This error entails stereotypes such as ‘confirmation bias’ and ‘anchor bias’. As an architect, ultimately to be an ‘urban designer’, the approach with a biased attitude will lead us to a stagnant architect, like a frog in the well. In order to become a prospective architect, we must realize that we see spaces subjectively and that one’s view cannot represent the ‘whole’.

In order to see the city as a ‘whole’, we aim to focus on the relationship between the 'insider’ and the 'outsider’ that exists together in the city. The 'insider' who directly experiences the city as a resident and the 'outsider' who sees the city from the perspective of a traveler coexist. Nevertheless, as insiders, we might be overestimating our knowledge of the city and underestimating the perspectives of others.

In this context, we would like to provide an opportunity for the Korean architecture students and international architecture students to share and compare their respective ‘tips’ of Seoul and view the city as a ‘whole’. Participants will explore various areas of Seoul together, share different images each of the participants took in the process, and reinterpret the city through these exchanges. This approach, in which one faces the familiar environment in a unfamiliar way, questioning one’s own sight and subjectivity, will be the first step toward "the whole, not the tip of the city."

We hope this project provides an experience to share the views of ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’ of the city, making a shift in our perspective on perceiving the city, further bringing us closer to become a farsighted ‘urban designer’.
